The goal of the competition is to support local governments in different parts of the world in developing creative, bold ideas that improve their residents' lives. Previously held for cities in the United States and Europe, the third edition of the competition invited cities in Latin America and the Caribbean to participate.
With approximately 900 cities eligible, a robust application tool was created in three languages that saved and stored applicant data while also developing a public site to communicate regular updates about the competition.
Working together with the Bloomberg Philanthropies teams to create a detailed application that accommodated a wide range of question formats drawling in rich aesthetics, photography, and iconography that reflected the unique landscapes of the regions in focus.
The challenge was creating a robust application tool in three languages that saved and stored applicant data while also developing a public site to communicate regular updates about the competition.
After launching the application 363 Latin American and Caribbean cities entered the Mayors Challenge. Nearly 80% of those cities went on to submit formal applications to the competition, using the website's completely authenticated environment to store and submit data about their bold ideas.
From the initial RSVPs to the eventual finalist application, the website served to deliver a regular stream of communication updates on the competition's progress - with every detail available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Applying innovation and technology to create better lives for city citizens was met by innovation and creative solutions.
